Club Treasurer steps down after 46 years
17th November 2012

St.Mary’s Rasharkin treasurer John McAuley makes way at the top table after forty six years in charge of financial affairs at the South West Antrim Club. John, a true gentleman and lifelong Gael has worked tirelessly for his club as Treasurer since 1965. John is a former member of the Antrim County Committee, a regular member on sub-committees within the county and a county selector in the 70's & 80’s. He is renowned throughout Antrim and Ulster for his financial knowledge and outstanding dedication to Club and County

John joined St.Mary’s in 1952 as a youthful U14 footballer, one of four brothers who all gave tremendous service to Rasharkin; all four men were members of the famous St.Mary’s team in the late fifties / early sixties. John found time after his playing career to represent St.Mary’s as an excellent referee for over twenty years and had the honour of refereeing county championship finals at Senior and Intermediate level.

John enjoyed an accomplished career in banking and held posts at Managerial and Inspection level within Ulster Bank. These positions took John as far west as Mayo and as far south as Dublin and Kildare. It was during his stint with the lily white county in 1958 that he achieved senior championship success playing for the green and gold of Kilcock GAC when they claimed their fifth Kildare Senior Football Championship. No matter where John was appointed, there was always time set aside to ensure the books at St. Mary’s Rasharkin were balanced.

John McAuley is truly steeped in the blue and amber of his beloved St.Mary’s, a trustee of the club, his expertise still remains in the executive committee. The very capable Dominic O’Neill steps up as Treasurer after serving ten years as assistant.

Other changes at St.Mary’s AGM sees Michael Hardy make a return to the top table, a former Club secretary for fourteen years, the very popular and respected quarry manager takes the reigns as Chairman following the outgoing Anthony McMullan. Thomas Doherty was elected as Vice Chairman, Thomas Donaghy as Assistant Treasurer, Cathal McMullan as Youth Officer, Brendan Etherson as Players Representative and Sharon Kearns as ASAP Officer.
