Ulster Scor na nOg semi final took
place on Saturday 11th December in Abbey Grammar School Newry. This semi final
was contested by the County Champions of Antrim, Derry and Down in the eight
categories, Trath na gCeisteanna (Question Time), Amhranaiocht Aonair (Solo
Singing), Ceol Uirlise (Instrumental Music), Aithrisroreacht / Scealaoicht
(Recitation / Storytelling), Bailead Ghrupa (Ballad Group Singing), Nuachleas
(Novelty Act), Rince Foirne (Ceili Dancing) and Rince Seit (Set Dancing).
The winners from tonight would go forward to the Ulster final in
Silverbridge in January. County Down was the venue and the home county came out
top in five out of eight categories. Indeed they had strong representation in
most sections; however, the home support may have weighed heavily on the
adjudicators judgment.
St.Galls Belfast came away with the Instrumental
music, Slaughneil Emmetts were too clever in Question Time with O'Donovan Rossa
Magherafelt collecting Novelty Act the only other category not won by the Mourne
County.
Niamh, Eoghan and Fearghal Kennedy did themselves, their family,
their club and their county proud representing St.Mary's Rasharkin and Antrim
brilliantly in the Novelty Act. Their acting was first class and was commented
on by many; they ticked a lot of boxes on the night but unfortunately missed
out. This trio had notably raised their game from the Antrim Final and deserve
must praise. Sadly it must be noted that travelling support was thin on the
ground but the few that did make it really enjoyed their act and would love to
see it again. Perhaps this can be arranged in the near future
Well done
to all concerned.
