St.Mary's Rasharkin End of Season U8 and U10 Football Blitz - 2010
10th October 2010
St Mary's Rasharkin played host to an end of season U10 and U8 blitz at Dreen on Sunday 10th October 2010. Con Magees Glenravel, Cuchullians Dunloy, Erins Own Cargin, Kickhams Creggan, St.Comgalls Antrim, All Saints Ballymena, and Casements Portglenone all accepted invitations to attend this tournament with St.Mary's Rasharkin making up the eighth team. The blitz was played off in a nine aside ABC format. The A team being made up from U10's, the B team being an U8 and U10 mixture and the C team being made up from U8's and a few under 6's. Each club would play their three teams at the same time against its opposing club and an accumulative score went forward as the club total for each set of games (3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 point for a defeat).

The eight teams were sectioned off into two groups of four; each club played three sets of games to determine first, second, third and fourth in each section. The two top clubs in each section would make up four clubs competing for the tournament cup and the two bottom clubs in each section would make up the four clubs competing for the tournament shield.

As the clubs arrived on time at 10.30am the organisers worked frantically to cover any last minute hitches. Proceedings got underway five minutes before schedule at 10.55am as Group A teams Glenravel took on Rasharkin on main field, Dunloy and Antrim locked horns on the Jamsie McLarnon pitch. This was followed by Group B team's matches between Creggan and Cargin on the main pitch and Portglenone and All Saints on the Jamsie McLarnon pitch.

Round 1, Round 2 and Round 3 were all played off on schedule. Three of the four teams in Group A all finished on the same points and following a check on score difference Glenravel came first, Dunloy second, Antrim third and Rasharkin fourth. Group B would see Creggan top, followed by Cargin, All Saints Ballymena in third and Portglenone bottom.

The Shield semi finals would see Antrim take on Portglenone and All Saints face the hosts Rasharkin. The Cup semi finals would see Glenravel face Cargin and Creggan face Dunloy. Portglenone progressed to the final of the shield to take on All Saints and emerged as shield winners. In the cup final Creggan would take on Glenravel with Creggan crowned champions.

This tournament was a major success with 240 children being catered for from eight different clubs and a total of fifty four games. To pull this off without a hitch was incredible. Everyone who attended this competition shared the same sentiments, that it was a worthwhile day out.

The club wishes to thank, firstly all the players for attending in such good numbers and for playing the games in a sporting manner, the organising committee for their planning, the U10 and U8 team mentors from all eight clubs, the three main coordinators Benny Hegarty, Patrick Kennedy and Terry Hasson who were always available to assist, the catering staff in the hall and the sandwich makers are also to be recognised for their usual high standards.

This tournament would not have been the success that it was if it wasn't for our young whistlers and referees who done themselves and the club proud, we are indebted to them for their co-operation. They were ably assisted by their umpires and linesmen in all games. The ground staff around the pitch also deserve a word of mention for setting up the six playing fields and for clearing the area after the event. Tomas McCann is to be thanked for his attendance and presentation of awards. Parents and supporters who have turned up throughout the season are also to be included in the word of thanks.

Everyone will be looking forward to next year's event and hopefully it will be as big a success.
