Stars in their eyes - No shortage of Stars in Rasharkin
5th February 2011
A sell out crowd of over 750 members, supporters, fans and competitors from St.Mary's Rasharkin packed into Tullyglass House Hotel on Saturday 5th February to witness the extraordinary event based on the popular TV show "Stars in their eyes".

Following the massive success of the dancing event "Reeling Round Rasharkin" at the end of 2009 the events committee at St.Mary's had the almost impossible challenge of coming up with something unique to compete with the very high standards set then.

Singing talent from around the club and the local parish were uncovered to perform as famous celebrities and compete for votes from the audience hoping to be crowned champions all in the name of entertainment.

The singers worked hard on their vocals behind the scenes since October and, as the event drew closer the performers all stepped up their practises. Each act had their own performance to choreograph and stage on the night but all eleven acts would come together to perform a group song at the end.

The judges for the night were Cora McLarnon, a blow in from Ballinderry, Sinead McGrath, a local music lover and teacher, Eamon McGarrell, Rasharkin's answer to Louis Walsh and Barry McElduff the current Chairman of the Arts, Culture and Leisure Committee at Stormount.

The renowned singer from the All Ireland Talent show Niamh McGlinchy was the warm up act. She performed wonderfully and demonstrated her outstanding singing talents.

Each act then took to the stage to perform as their chosen artists. All decades of music were covered featuring Queen, Westlife, Katy Perry, The Village People and Gareth Brooks to name a few. From the outset the standard was high and after everyone performed there was a public vote to find the top three acts. Those making it to this stage were The Village People, The T-Birds and Mature Steps. The judges then had the casting vote to crown the young boy band "The T-birds" as winners. They were made up from Ryan Lynch, Enda McFerran, Conor McKeever, James Scally and Kelan Darragh.

No one would have imagined in their wildest dreams that "Stars in Their Eyes" would have taken off to be an incredible success. This evening's entertainment will live long in the memory of everyone who attended.

Comperes for the evening were popular duo Terry and Michael Hasson (Junior) who are fast becoming Rasharkin's Ant & Dec. These guys made the evening flow with their humour and quick wit.

This event would not have been the success it was without the support and expertise of Joe Dalrymple with is outstanding video productions. Joe spent hours of filming; producing an intro for each performance, he is to be recognised for his superb efforts.

Aiden Dougan and Paul Moore are to be thanked for work with the lighting, sound system and music.

All twenty nine singers and performers were brilliant and all deserve praise for their entertainment and excellent routines. This was captivated in the finale group performance raising the roof.

A special word of thanks goes to all the sponsors who supported this venture especially are two main E. McMullan Ltd. and Etherson Meats.

Finally the dedicated and industrious organising committee carried out another superb flawless event which will be talked about for years. This is simply why this event was a remarkable success; special thanks go to them - Thomas Doherty, Benny Hegarty, Natalie Hasson, Elaine Donaghy, Pauline Quigg, Aileen Hardy, Noel McGuckin, Ciaran Hasson and Paddy McLernon.

The club are indebted to all involved with this event which has generated a feel good factor around the club, the parish and community of Rasharkin.
