Match Report U14 Football League Lisburn (3-7). v Rasharkin(3-3)
St Mary’s made the long journey on Friday night to St Patrick’s Lisburn in Round 2 of the league. Having suffered a 17 point defeat to the St Patricks team in the Feilé the home side started as firm favourites. Played in very wet and stormy conditions it was the home side who took an early lead playing against the breeze and a pointed free and goal gave Lisburn a great foot hold on the game. Rasharkin fought back and a point from Odhran McGarrell and goal from Callum Scullion had the visitor’s level after 10 minutes. Another point from McGarrell after a great through ball from Lewis Bond put the sharks into the lead but just before half time Lisburn put over another single to leave the sides level at half time.
Rasharkin had an uphill battle in the second half against the strong breeze . Three quick points from the excellent twin midfielders of Lisburn seemed to signal the end to Rasharkin’s hopes but the lads dug in and some fine play by full backs Matthew McNally and Gerard Kelly saw a dangerous situation quickly turned into a counter attack with Killian O’Boyle firing to the net to level again. Another McGarrell free put the visitor’s one up but the home side put the ball in the Rasharkin net seconds later to restore their 2 point lead. A fine passing move started by the Rasharkin defence saw Liam Quigg collected the ball on the 21 and a quick pass to the on rushing Cathair Henderson played the Sharkin midfielder through and the young man dually fired to the net to put the visitors one point up with only minutes to go. A soft free gave St Patricks the opportunity to equalize which they took and just as the game seemed to be heading for a draw a combination of a half block and the swirling wind saw the ball end up in the Rasharkin net. A very cruel end to the game for our youngsters who battled brilliantly throughout and have made tremendous progress in a very short time. The boys will feel confident going into the return league game at Dreen in a few weeks time.
