SW U14 League Shield

Tir na nOg 1-08 v 1-03 Rasharkin

Rasharkin travelled to top of the league Randalstown on Friday night for their third game of the league campaign. A blistering start by the Dreen lads saw them take an early lead through Odhran McGarrell with a free after good work from impressive midfielder Killian O’Boyle. The much younger Rasharkin side seemed to settle faster into their stride than the hosts, and when Brian Og O'Neill turned over possession on the half way a quick ball to inside forward Rory McFerran saw the nippy corner forward turn his marker with ease only for his effort on goal to come back off the upright but the ever vigilant McGarrell seized the rebound and drove it to the net. This seemed to wake Tir na Og from their slumber and within minutes the hosts were level. The home side continued to exert pressure but the very impressive Tom McIvor at full back was dominant and thwarted attack after attack. A fine interception by McIvor saw him play a long ball to centre forward Pol Hardy who was fouled just as he was about to pull the trigger and McGarrell set the resulting free over the bar to put Rasharkin one up again. The Randalstown lads finished the half strongly and put over three points in a row to give them the lead at the half way mark.

Rasharkin came under severe pressure in the second half with the hosts lads going all out to finish the game. A great save by Tiernan O’Boyle was matched by some outstanding rear guard action by McIvor, Gerard Kelly and Lewis Bond. Killian Oboyle was the dominant force at midfield and his determined runs lead to a seris of fouls by the opposition but the visitors failed to take advantage of these. Another point by Killian Oboyle was answered by two more from the Randalstown lads and despite a determined final push  with Callum Scullion, Liam Quigg and Donnadch Kearns all having chances it was the hosts that held on for the victory.

An excellent performance by our very young and ever improving team that will surely stand them in good stead in the league games to come.
