Rasharkin fall at final hurdle
25th September 2014

St. Mary’s Rasharkin bowed out in the final of this year’s Junior hurling championship to a spirited Con Magees side at Loughgiel Saturday past. The Dreen men failed to reproduce the scintillating form demonstrated against St.Teresa’s and Shane O’Neill’s Glenarm in earlier rounds which secured their passage to the decider.

The Glensmen got off to the best possible start with wind advantage and had the sliothar in the back of St.Mary’s net after only four minutes, a very fortuitous goal which proved to be the vital score at the end of seventy minutes. Declan McKay pulled arrears to the minimum from two converted frees before Glenravel’s talisman Niall Donnelly restored a healthy lead midway through the half. Rasharkin tried hard but simply couldn’t find their stride until the closing five minutes of the half when they pulled the tie all square thanks to points from Thomas McMullan (2), Brendan McMullan (2) and Declan McKay.

Glenravel turned around at the interval and wasted no time pushing in front once more through two pointed frees from Donnelly inside the first four minutes. St.Mary’s responded again with impressive efforts from James Scally and Declan McKay. However, Con Magees turned the screw midway through the half from the stick of Niall Donnelly who pointed a further five second half frees (a total of nine). Rasharkin grabbed conciliation points from Daniel Hasson and Conor McKeever in the closing stages but Glenravel held on to run out three point winners on a scoreline 1-12 to 0-12.

St.Mary’s Rasharkin: James O’Mullan, Donagh Quigg, Joey Quinn, Paul McMullan, Daniel Doherty, Shane Hasson, Conor Donaghy, Brendan McMullan and Thomas McMullan, Eamon McNeill, Conor Hasson, Aidan Darragh, Declan McKay, Conor McKeever, James Scally

Subs: Daniel McKay, Conor McFerran, Daniel Hasson and Kevin Agnew

Commiserations to St.Mary’s players and management who gave a terrific account of themselves throughout the Championship with memorable displays which will stand them in good stead to arise, dust down and get back next season to finish the job.

A massive thanks must go to the many supporters who’ve turned out in great numbers to get behind the boys all season.
