d on the trophy from the outset of this Championship as they blazed through the campaign seeing off the challenges of a determined Lamh Dhearg side in the quarter final and convincingly beat Cardinal O’Donnell’s in the semis. St.Teresa’s also craved a similar trail to the decider defeating Davitt’s and Glenarm enroute. This fixture proved to be the third meeting of these two sides this season, however this tie was certainly the most crucial, the Dreen men held all the aces coming into this showdown winning the two previous league encounters, they also overcame the "Super T’s” in the quarter final of last year’s Junior Championship.
Lamh Dhearg clubman Brendan Toland was the man in the middle and got proceedings off right on time. St.Teresa’s centre half back Paul McGoldrick settled early nerves for his side after two following a well taken point from range. Shane Hasson replied for St.Mary’s before the Glen Road side scored four without reply, three from the stick of Philip Maguire and one from Colm McGoldrick. Eamon McNeill pulled one back for Rasharkin after eleven, but the Super T’s were well in the groove and pegged off three more back to back scores to open a handsome six point lead. Rasharkin looked shell-shocked, but finished the half strong to reduce arrears to three, following points from Conor McFerran, Enda McFerran, Joey Quinn and two from the converted frees by team captain Declan McKay to leave a half time score line St.Mary’s Rasharkin 0-7 St.Teresa’s 0-10.
Managers Paul McFerran and Liam McCart rallied Rasharkin well at half time, they rang in the changes with the introduction of John Doherty and Thomas Doherty early in the second half, which had an instant impact. St.Mary’s went from three down to reduce the tie to the minimum with points apiece from Eamon McNeill and Enda McFerran, before the latter sorted neatly beyond Naoise Whalen on the St.Teresa’s line to raise the green flag and send Rasharkin into the lead for the first time on the thirteen minute of the second half.
Naomh Muire were now well on their way, from this point on there looked to be only one winner, St.Teresa’s only managed two points in the second half through their talisman Philip Maguire as Declan McKay converted a hat-trick of points to close out the fixture with a three point win and send the St.Mary’s faithful into raptures. Final Score St.Mary’s Rasharkin 1-12 St.Teresa’s 0-12
This was a typical hard fought final and a well-earned Championship for Rasharkin, undoubtedly the best team prevailed, this group is a well drilled outfit with an abundance of skill and determination, well done to all the players for their efforts and dedication this season. Paul McFerran and Liam McCart along with Tom Magill deserve a lot of credit and praise, you’d have to say that if this team performs the way they can there’ll be more days out like Saturday and more silverware to come to Dreen.
